In October 2025 at Adelaide Airport, Flight One School of Engineering is hosting a special fee-free course for eligible South Australian (adult) residents interested in gaining practical mechanical and electrical hand-skills and core knowledge set in the context of Aircraft Maintenance Engineering.

Delivered at our professional aircraft engineer training centre, the course will take approximately 6 months (3 days a week). On successful conclusion, graduates will hold all the core units from the Cert IV Aeroskills including a complete Cert II in Aeroskills, plus additional training units that comprehensively equip you to transition into workplaces and apprenticeships in aircraft maintenance, or similar fields in industry and defence.

Training is funded by the South Australian Government and industry.

This programme is ideally suited to anyone who has been seeking a way into this exciting industry or an apprenticeship in Aircraft Engineering, or anyone with a passion for practical, hand-skill based work, but in need of skills and qualifications to enable them to approach employers and reach their potential. Flight One offers an apprentice programme for individuals who have secured an aircraft engineer role and are looking to upgrade their Aeroskills Cert II to a Cert IV while employed in an aircraft maintenance organisation. Engineering Foundations

The Flight One Aircraft Engineer Prep Course introduces adult learners to the fundamentals of aircraft maintenance engineering in a real aviation setting. Designed to cater to beginners, the course covers essential hand skills, workplace safety, and the basics of aircraft systems. Trainees gain transferable skills that are valuable not only in aviation but also in industries like automotive, mining, and manufacturing and defence. The programme provides an overview of both avionics (electrical and navigation systems) and mechanical systems (engines, hydraulics, and airframes), preparing students for further studies, apprenticeships or employment.

Pathways & Qualification Outcomes

This qualification equips trainees with entry-level skills for roles in aircraft maintenance workshops, supporting tasks like basic repairs and component servicing under supervision. Delivered by trainers with decades of experience across commercial, military, and general aviation, the programme ensures students gain practical, industry-relevant knowledge.

Eligibility

To be eligible to join this special course, candidates must not be enrolled in high school, vocational, or university training, or currently working full time. Applicants must be an Australian or NZ citizen (or eligible visa holder) residing in South Australia and minimum 16 years of age at commencement.

Tailored for Job-Seekers

The Flight One Aircraft Engineer Prep Course provides a hands-on introduction to aircraft maintenance engineering, covering both mechanical and avionics fundamentals. The course equips students with transferable skills in workplace safety, precision hand tools, and aircraft systems. With training delivered by industry experts, graduates gain foundational knowledge applicable to aviation, automotive, mining, and manufacturing industries.

Special arrangements have been made for industry guests and mentors to attend and provide additional industry context, insights and support to ensure that trainees are well informed and prepared to enter employment pathways – directly, or via an apprenticeship. Flight One Apprentice Programme team members will also provide guidance and advice regarding this popular industry pathway.

Job-Seeker Aeroskills

The Job-Seeker Aeroskills course provides students with a range of versatile, foundational skills. The course includes:

  • Complete MEA20418 Certificate II in Aeroskills (Nationally Recognised Training outcome)
  • 4 x Advanced Aeroskills Mechanical and Avionics A & B Skill Clusters (see units tab for details)
  • basic engineering theory, workplace practice and occupational health and safety
  • basic aviation theory and principles of flight
  • practical workshops to learn about mechanical and electrical components, hydraulics, pneumatics
  • using professional tools and equipment to undertake practical tasks
  • electronics, frame assembly and simple fabrication, software and flight controller preparation, motor and body assembly, flight testing

Graduates who have shown dedication and promise will also receive recommendations from the Flight One School of Engineering training team – an invaluable asset when job hunting and networking with potential employers.

 

Entry Criteria

General Requirements

Following are the entry requirements for the South Australian Funded Job-Seekers Certificate II in Aeroskills.

To be eligible for this course, applicants must meet all of the following requirements:

  • Be an Australian or New Zealand citizen, or hold an eligible visa; and

  • Be residing in South Australia at the time of application and throughout the course; and

  • Be unemployed or under-employed (as defined by South Australian Government funding guidelines); and

  • Be aged 16 years or older in the year of commencement; and

  • Successfully complete a Language, Literacy and Numeracy (LLN) assessment as required by Skills SA; and

In accordance with South Australian funding reguations, only holders of the following visas are eligible for subsidised training:

  • All permanent residency visa holders
  • Skilled – Work Regional (subclass 491)

Application Process

Application Process

Applications are to be submitted via the online application form located here: https://flightone.edu.au/academy/apply/fose/ and select “S.A. Aircraft Maintenance Prep Course (Adelaide)”. Note: If you are registered with an employment agency, please select “S.A. Job-Seekers Certificate II in Aeroskills (Adelaide)” as your course option. These options are both for the same programme but allow us to identify necessary links to employment services.

Please upload with your application copies of the following documents:

  • Licence or other document verifying your SA address
  • Passport or other evidence of citizenship
  • If you are not Australia, your VEVO
  • Your highest completed qualification graduation certificate and academic results (eg: high school)

You will be contacted to arrange an LLN Appointment at our Adelaide Airport training centre where we will assist you to complete the following steps:

  • SA Govt mandated LLN test – the snapshot Reading and Numeracy Indicator (SRNI) test. The SRNI is used for assessing core skills for training in South Australia and typically takes 15-30 minutes to complete.This test verifies that you have high school equivalent language, literacy and numeracy skills and are eligible to enrol in an SA funded programme. We are required to supervise the test and deliver it individually or in small groups.
  • A short discussion with the Head of Engineer Training or a senior instructor is usually arranged after the LLN test to discuss your training and career objectives.

All candidates will receive formal correspondence to confirm the outcome of their application. Candidates who are approved for enrolment will be provided with an SA Skills Participation Agreement and onboarding instructions.

There is no fee payable for the enrolment process.
