Introduction

Flight One School of Aviation delivers integrated theory, practical flight training and assessment for domestic and international students working towards Australian pilot licences through formal Australian Qualifications Framework diplomas. Eligible domestic students may also apply to use a VET Student Loan towards approved tuition fees.

Training provider and approvals
Flight One Australia Pty Ltd, trading as Flight One School of Aviation (ABN 73 010 428 805 | RTO 31285 | CRICOS provider 01302M). Flight training is delivered in conjunction with Flight Two Pty Ltd t/a Flight One (ABN 12 137 904 771 | CASA.141FTO.0129).

Training is conducted at Archerfield Airport in Brisbane by experienced aviation instructors using authentic training equipment, flight simulation and a well-maintained aircraft fleet.

For more than 40 years, Flight One has maintained a strong focus on aviation safety, quality and professional standards. As part of a broader aviation group spanning charter operations, airport services and aircraft maintenance, the school is positioned to deliver practical, industry-informed training. The programme uses an airline-oriented, scenario-based approach to support career readiness across general aviation, charter, freight and airline pathways.

About commercial piloting

Commercial pilots conduct safety-critical flying for reward across sectors including charter, aeromedical services, passenger transport, freight, aerial photography and survey work.

Training develops the aeronautical knowledge, practical flying skills and professional behaviours needed to operate modern aircraft systems, navigation equipment and communications technology in a disciplined operational environment.

Why integrate the multi-engine instrument rating?

Multi-engine aeroplane class rating
Develops the skills required to operate aeroplanes with more than one engine.
Instrument rating
Prepares pilots to operate under the Instrument Flight Rules within the privileges of their rating.

The programme incorporates both outcomes after the commercial pilot phase. Twin-engine training is conducted in aircraft such as the Piper Seminole. Beechcraft Baron training may also be available on request, subject to suitability and aircraft availability.

Integrating these outcomes creates a more efficient training pathway and broadens the graduate’s operational experience and employment readiness.

Course outcomes

The programme is designed for beginners and built around licence and qualification readiness. It combines formal aeronautical knowledge training with practical flight training and assessment aligned to applicable CASA and national vocational education requirements. Flight training includes all applicable ratings and endorsements required for flight radio, recreational navigation, controlled aerodromes and controlled airspace.

Expected CASA outcomes

Subject to demonstrated competency and all applicable CASA requirements:

Private Pilot Licence (PPL)
Commercial Pilot Licence (CPL)
Multi-Engine Aeroplane Class Rating (MEA)
Instrument Rating (IR)

Nationally recognised qualifications

Subject to successful completion of all required units and assessments:

AVI50222 Diploma of Aviation (Commercial Pilot Licence – Aeroplane)

  • Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS)
Completion requirements:
Licence, rating and qualification outcomes are subject to the student demonstrating competency and meeting all applicable CASA and course requirements. Units of Competency are issued only after the relevant course assessments and final flight-test requirements have been successfully completed; they are not issued progressively throughout the programme. See the FOSA policies, procedures and student information for further detail.

Training and assessment

Training arrangements
Training combines face-to-face classroom learning, briefings, flight planning, practical flight instruction, supported online learning and flight-simulator activities. Training is conducted by experienced flight instructors using Flight One’s training fleet and approved facilities.
Assessment arrangements
Assessment is conducted in accordance with applicable CASA and ASQA requirements. Methods may include multiple-choice and short-answer assessments, written responses, observed group activities, practical aviation assessments, theory examinations and flight tests.

Recognition of Prior Learning

Applicants with well-documented previous flight training and/or aeronautical experience may be eligible for Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) towards Units of Competency included in these qualifications. If you wish to seek RPL, advise Flight One at the time of application so your evidence and available entry pathway can be reviewed.

Delivery mode and attendance

ASIC security checks may include a national police check, an Australian Criminal Intelligence Commission criminal assessment, an Australian Security Intelligence Organisation national security assessment and a Department of Home Affairs VEVO check. Applicants with a significant criminal history may not be eligible to hold an ASIC.

Medical requirements for international students

The timing and evidence requirements differ according to whether the applicant is already residing in Australia or applying from overseas.

Applicants residing in Australia

Applicants residing in Australia must complete the full CASA aviation medical process and receive their CASA Class 1 Aviation Medical Certificate at least four weeks before course commencement.

Applicants residing outside Australia

Applicants should obtain their CASA Class 1 Aviation Medical Certificate before commencement wherever possible. This provides the greatest confidence that an unexpected medical issue will not prevent completion of the Commercial Pilot Licence.

An applicant who has not received the certificate by the commencement date may be permitted to begin training, but may need to provide alternative medical clearance and sign additional documentation acknowledging the associated risks.

Medical evidence required before commencement

Preferred evidence
Complete the full CASA aviation medical in your home country, or during a visit to Australia, and obtain the CASA Class 1 Aviation Medical Certificate before commencing training.
Alternative evidence
Complete a local aviation medical examination to identify any issues that could affect the later CASA medical assessment.
Minimum interim evidence
If neither option is available, complete a thorough examination with a general medical practitioner and obtain a signed letter on the doctor’s letterhead confirming that no medical issues were identified and that the applicant is in good health.

View typical aviation medical assessment components
  • Medical history: detailed information about past illnesses and conditions, potentially supported by reports from a family doctor or specialist.
  • Physical examination: a thorough assessment normally completed by a Designated Aviation Medical Examiner.
  • Eye examination: including colour-vision assessment and, where required, further examination by an approved eye examiner or optometrist.
  • Audiogram: a hearing test against the applicable aviation standard.
  • Electrocardiogram: an assessment of heart health, particularly for applicants over 40.
  • Blood and urine tests: tests that may include glucose and lipid assessment.
  • Age-related testing: some examinations, including ECGs and audiograms, may be required more frequently according to age.

Important medical information

All international students must present a CASA Class 1 Aviation Medical Certificate before or during the early stages of training.

A student who elects to commence before receiving the certificate accepts the risk that they may later be unable to satisfy CASA’s medical requirements. If the required certificate cannot be obtained, the student may be excluded from further flight training.

This may affect the student’s enrolment and visa and may result in fees associated with completed or current training phases being non-refundable under Flight One’s Refund Policy.
